every damn which way

Feat 52: Week #12

ever notice that when you start listening to and consoling a friend, someone in a rough patch, that you at some point get around to talking about yourself? “yeah, that happened to me… this is what i did/said/felt…” etc.

no? just me then. i’m the only jerk in the room…

not the kind of song i typically write. i don’t usually… well… pop rock.

smile lines

Feat 52: Week #11

another song that was born in a conversation i had with my friend sarah.  there was a piece on npr earlier this week about another great american export: the hatred of our own bodies. it is, after all, the american way. shut up, be productive, buy lots of shit, and cheat death/aging along the way.  no wonder we’re more depressed and alone these days than ever before.

there’s only up

Feat 52: Week #10

the other side of a break-up…  i have a good friend who’s going through one now.  they always suck…  even worse in the spring when the body’s electric with… it.

silhouette

Feat 52: Week #9

a short sketch that came together a few days ago… a memory of an outdoor record sale…

also a part of the RPM Challenge Outros.  (which, as of this past weekend, is done.)  check back soon for more info about it.

know the feeling

Feat 52: Week #8

no, i am not a threat to myself. i think this is normal… curiosities about things that are out of bounds… part of the human experience/condition i reckon.  a darker part but a part nonetheless.

another tune included in the RPM Challenge record Outros.  rapidly approaching… shit…

beauty makes uneasy

Feat 52: Week #7

an instumental number.  shall i say… influences are obvious…

cheers.

this song will also be a part of my RPM Challenge record Outros.

follow a candle

Feat 52: Week #6

one reason i’d find it hard to live on the west coast is the oh-so-noticeable absence of thunderstorms like i’m used to – growing up in maine. this is a song inspired by those storms that visited us out in the countryside.

go slow

Feat 52: Week #5

Anyone who hasn’t experienced the ecstasy of betrayal knows nothing about ecstasy at all.

- Jeab Genet

there are some songs that are strange, nocturnal creatures that can be captured or experience only late at night. this has been such a song. i have to be just tired enough, full of wine, hunched over a guitar that i can barely play… and it perches on my windowsill, smirking at my frustration and self-indulgence. then, if i can, i catch it and add it to the collection. but they’re never again as beautiful to me as they were the evening they first visited, wild and innocent, unmolested by my ego, my inability.

this song will also be in the record i’m making for the RPM Challenge, which i’m tentatively calling Outros. i love them. i come to life in outros.

this song is about my cat

Feat 52: Week #4

japanese mustang copy + silvertone 1464 = helocopter

this song was originally slated to be my week #3 release but putting off fixing my computer got the best of me… again. after fixing the hard drive (ultimatebootcd.com) this weekend, i picked up where i left off. (and luckily didn’t have to reinstall the os, daw, drivers, plug-ins, etc…)

and just to clear up any confusion surrounding what the subject might be, this song is definitely about my cat. to those of you who choose to inform me that i don’t, in fact, have a cat, i say “exactly.”

box of letters

feat 52: week #3

came home to finish the song for this week… computer wouldn’t boot… wrote a different song about a conversation i had this morning with a friend in milwaukee… installed saw studio on my laptop… tried to figure out how to use it… recorded the song… it’s all a blur…

it’s just a sketch. wow… i think may have mumbled my way through most the song. so, yeah… i may try to rerecord it later on… right now, i’m going to bed…
