Feat 52: Week #6
one reason i’d find it hard to live on the west coast is the oh-so-noticeable absence of thunderstorms like i’m used to – growing up in maine. this is a song inspired by those storms that visited us out in the countryside.
Feat 52: Week #5
Anyone who hasn’t experienced the ecstasy of betrayal knows nothing about ecstasy at all.
– Jeab Genet
there are some songs that are strange, nocturnal creatures that can be captured or experience only late at night. this has been such a song. i have to be just tired enough, full of wine, hunched over a guitar that i can barely play… and it perches on my windowsill, smirking at my frustration and self-indulgence. then, if i can, i catch it and add it to the collection. but they’re never again as beautiful to me as they were the evening they first visited, wild and innocent, unmolested by my ego, my inability.
this song will also be in the record i’m making for the RPM Challenge, which i’m tentatively calling Outros. i love them. i come to life in outros.
Feat 52: Week #4
japanese mustang copy + silvertone 1464 = helocopter
this song was originally slated to be my week #3 release but putting off fixing my computer got the best of me… again. after fixing the hard drive (ultimatebootcd.com) this weekend, i picked up where i left off. (and luckily didn’t have to reinstall the os, daw, drivers, plug-ins, etc…)
and just to clear up any confusion surrounding what the subject might be, this song is definitely about my cat. to those of you who choose to inform me that i don’t, in fact, have a cat, i say “exactly.”
feat 52: week #3
came home to finish the song for this week… computer wouldn’t boot… wrote a different song about a conversation i had this morning with a friend in milwaukee… installed saw studio on my laptop… tried to figure out how to use it… recorded the song… it’s all a blur…
it’s just a sketch. wow… i think may have mumbled my way through most the song. so, yeah… i may try to rerecord it later on… right now, i’m going to bed…
Feat 52: Week #1
no better time to be visited by the microsoft blue screen of death than right at the end of a recording session… at the beginning of a year-long project. (still need to order and install that new hard drive.) fortunately it was only the vocals that i had to completely rerecord.
Speaking Terms is a sketch i put together inspired by conversations i had after getting home from the holidays. some things we can change, some we can’t…
Happy New Year folks!! i had not yet gotten used to writing ’08 and now it’s behind us. and with the new year come resolutions. well… for some of us. my most challenging resolution is one that i’ve been wanting to do for a few years now but have not had the where-with-all to follow through. …until this year. my interest in it was renewed last year when my friend, Tate Eskew, embarked on a similar resolution.
the resolution: to write and record a new song each week during the year of 2009.
pure and simple. i thought of making more rules for myself but that defeats the point. my intent is for this to be a way to stretch my creativity and ability on the various instruments and gear that i have collected over the years and to challenge the way i approach all parts of the songwriting process. the songs and arrangements will vary in length and complexity given the time and tools at my disposal in a given week. i also will be using this project to gradually move away from ProTools to a different DAW, SAW Studio.
i will try to make a habit of posting the songs sunday night or monday morning if i can. let me know what you think. i always appreciate constructive feedback.
cheers.
